Messages after AVG scan

Hi guys, (Intel or Browntoa are you here?)

Just popped into mothers house and her PC was playing up. No virus software.

Have downloaded latest versions of

AVG free
Spybot
CCleaner

I don't use AVG at home so may be worrying over nothing, but when I did a scan of her PC it says no viruses but there are about 25 entries like this:

System Registry htmlfile\shell\open\command

The files are similar in that they are mostly open commands but the file prefix is different. I couldnt copy and paste them here sorry.

There are also some with Run, Run Once and Run Services.

AVG doesnt seem to be able to help me with them. Any ideas?

System is new, running XP home.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Most importantly has she got a firewall? As long as AVG isn't saying there's a virus there isn't one that it knows about, that's not to say there might not be worms or trojans that it hasn't recognised. You could always do a "google" search on things you're not sure of.

Just a thought. When you downloaded the latest AVG and Spybot did you immediately check for updates straight after you installed them ? They may not have had the most up-to-date data files.

    Firewall - using windows firewall.

All the files just end 'open command'. Don't really have a file name.

Yes ran immediate update before I did the scan. Definately no virus found. Latest versions of both AVG and Spybot. Nothing found on either scan other than these odd file paths in registry.
  • Could you use regedit, and export the branch you are talking about to a text file, and post it.. Were you just using regedit when you spotted these things, as shell/open/command is the file association of a particular file type, e.g. .doc should point to word, the run/runservices is normally there as well, and is where startup programs are registered.. see msconfig for a more user friendly list
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Hi, I could use regedit but am now at home.

Will post results when I visit her next. And no I wasn't using regedit when I found this, just came in from the AVG scan. But as I have never used AVG it alarmed me.

Just my 2c. worth.... the windows firewall isn't robust enough for my liking. Download & install Zone Alarm free from Zone Labs here......(also run the free scan as offered).....

Then, AFTER Zone Alarm is in place, ready to rock & roll, you disable the windows firewall and activate ZA.
