Car tax question

I am due to pick up a new Car (new to me, it isn't brand new) in the next week and because its coming from a Car supermarket it is not coming with any tax.

My thoughts are that seeing as I will be picking up the Car in the last week of the month, when I go and tax it they will give me a tax disc that will be due to run out at the end of September next year, effectively giving me 11 months road tax for the price of 12!

Is there any way that I can get around this? For various reasons I do need to pick it up during October but I could make it pretty much the last day so would I be able to pick the Car up, wait a day and then go and tax it on November 1st? Would the document I have proving that the Car is mine be dated so that they would give me tax to the end of September anyway?

I am not really interested ion doing anything illegal like driving around untaxed for any period I was just hoping if I could be a bit clever to avoid being ripped off by the Government.

You bought from a Car Supermarket?

I'd just wait until the new month to tax it, as long as it has a current MOT and you're insured, plus have the form filled in you can tax it. If they have claimed the tax back on the original disc then the car will not be taxed. You could, however, ask them to tax it as part of the deal. Most car firms can tax cars on site, and at £180ish for the year wouldn't be much loss on the sale of a car (that they've probably made a mint on, as most Car Supermarkets do!).

    Ask and you may receive?

Thanks for the advice re the tax. So you think I should just be able to go into the Post Office with the form and do it a day or so later on November 1st?
I know that Car Supermarkets are not normally a great place to buy but this was a great deal from Motorpoint. It is a full UK car, just over a year old with full service history, balance of main dealer warrant and just over 4000 miles on the clock for over £7k off list. I am not going to complain too much about that.

Hmmmm, doesn't seem a bad deal I guess  ;)

Tax it on the 1st, or try get the tax as part of the deal, even if it's only 6months from them it's better than nowt!

Car supermarkets normally only tax new vehicles on registration.

Nothing wrong with buying from most car supermarkets - a much better deal than you will get from Dodgy Dave's Used Car Deals in your local town and definitely a better deal than you will get from your local branded Main Stealer.

Used cars (if under 12 months old) from car supermarkets are virtually ALL ex-hire fleet from the major hire firms and will have standard manufacturer's warranty.

We've had several new and used vehicles from Motorpoint and can recommend them. No problems ever.

  • You can tax the vehicle 2 working days in advance of the 1st of the month at the Post Office if it is not currently taxed. However you cannot drive or keep vehicle on public highway until the tax disc comes into force (i.e. Nov 1st).

So if you want to wait to tax for Nov 1st then you cannot collect the vehicle from the car supermarket until Nov 1st, as legally it cannot go on road untaxed. Or you will have to get them to transport car to you.

To tax it you will need the V5C/2 New Keeper's Supplement from V5C Registration Certificate (Section 10, green in colour) which the dealer will give you, your insurance and MOT (if car is over 3yrs old). Take to post Office and they will issue you the disc.

As you cannot drive the car untaxed, and it is doubtful Motorpoint would deliver it without a charge, I think you will have to bite the bullet and tax it until end of Sept.

Motorpoint do not deliver. Collection only. Part of the economics of volume (and better value for the buyer). They sell far more cars per site than any other car dealer in the UK.
