Council tax rebate

Hi all,

we are in the process of emigrating and hope to relocate just after Christmas.

We are in the process of selling our house and I was just wondering is it possible to claim anything back of our council tax and other bills please?

Any advice most welcome, thanks.

  • Most people pay their council tax monthly, if you pay monthly you just stop paying when you no longer own the property, there may be part of a months payment due depending on when you move out, if you pay a lump sum once a year - you should be able to get the money back from when you move out until the end of the financial year.

As for your other bills, do you mean utilities - there are usually paid in arrears, ie, after you've used the gas or electricity. If you pay monthly and are in credit when you move out you should get a refund. If you pay quarterly you will owe them money. If you pay monthly and aren't in credit you will owe them money.

Car insurance - you can may be get something back if you pay once a year, they will usually add on an admin fee. I'm not sure how you stand if you pay monthly - you would need to ring and ask them, they will probably all have different rules about cancelling policies.

Car tax - you will get unused part back.

phone - you might be entitled to some line rental back on a land line, but calls are oviously billed in arrears.

Mobiles (contract) and broadband - you would have to give them a months notice anyway - so nothing to come back.

As for home and buildings insurance - I'm not sure to be honest, you would need to check with them as each company (like car insurance) probably has different rules about cancelling policies.

But I'm sure someone who knows more than I do about all of this will come along and give you advice.
  • Ahhh many thanks for this info and help. It's just the tax I was wondering about really. A good point about internet, are they all 3 months??

You will only get refund on car tax for unused complete months, e.g. if tax expires on 31.12.08, and you leave country on 5.11.08, you will just get December's back.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • Many thanks for the help
