Confused about emergency tax!

I just started a new job - my old job (I was there for 9 months) had me on tax code 603L. I understand this is the emergency tax code? (Admittedly I didn't give them my P45 when I started). How and when can I go about reclaiming tax? And what percentage of tax is charged under the emergency tax code?

Help!

Tax code 603L means that your non-taxable allowance is £6030 for the tax year 08-09. This can be included as an emergency tax code but is generally used to tell you what your non-taxable allowance is.

As you did not give your employer your P45 pt1 then they should have given you a P46 to fill in. I would recommend requesting one of these forms from your payroll department. You may also request that your payroll department reimburses you the extra tax you paid last month. If they cannot do this then you can wait until April when you receive your latest P60 and sent it to your local tax office who can then issue you with a rebate.

    I hope this helps.

603L is not an emergency tax code - it's the normal one. An emergency tax code would usually appear as BR
  • BR stands for Basic Rate. It is not an emergency tax code, it means you have a second job. This is a common misconception.

    Thanks.

I wonder why I've always either had a Week1 or BR code when I've started a job then?
And where does it state it means you have a second job and isn't used as an emergency one?

Because when you first start a new job, if HMRC haven't processed your P45 pt 1 from your old job they will assume this is a second job until it has been processed. Please see the link that I attached on a previous post, scroll down to the 'BR' code, it should explain it clearer.

You are wrong actually BR tax is usually used when a person has a second source of income as well, in may case when I had two jobs one used BR and the other 603L.

If an employer does not receive a P46/P45 and it is your only job they will use 603L month 1/ week 1 - this is not cumlative .

The quickest way to sort is get the new emplyers tax ref & tax office phone number and ring them up - they are very helpful best times to ring before 9am and after 3pm
