comet stole my cooker

Your post didn't really deal with this or help at all.
I disagree - I commented that some background information was useful; and I stick by what I say.
By the way I did not realise that your posts are only motivated by a wish to 'help' - I have obviously misjudged you, you are not a grumpy argumentative confrontational individual at all.0 -

Melodramatic complaints seem to have gone hand in hand with todays compensation culture. They are not effective complaint letters. I have often pointed this out. More or less all my posts point to where people have got it wrong complaining. If people take my knowledge of what works and what doesn't when complaining then it will help them. I write what works but thats not what people always want to hear, theres not much I can do about that.0 -
By the way Hersey you might get a better reception on this Carer support thread : http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1225289
- you see UKtim there are other ways of helping that don't just involve pointing out where people have got it wrong (in your opinion)0 -
I too would only put the relevant points in. That you didn't want the cooker to be removed but they did so by mistake and unfortunately it appears to have been disposed of. Then explain that it had been loaned to you while waiting for the new cooker to arrive.
By the way - who installed this 'interim' cooker? Gas appliances should only be installed by a corgi registered engineer. That includes disconnecting them too. With Comet you have usually paid around £70 for installation of the new cooker and that price includes removal of the old one. They made an honest mistake - you should have specified to the guys who came that you wanted to keep it.
Your letter should be short and to the point and noting that the mistake was both ways - they will be more inclined to recompense you for the items that you've lost.
Another point. You mention distress at the equipment you have lost and the recompense required for this. At no point do you mention that the person who loaned you the cooker is furious at losing their property. Don''t you think the recipient of this letter will think that it's odd that you are not bothered about the cooker but you are about the contents? Is the person who lent you the cooker bothered that it's gone? Are you being totally honest here? Did you just forget you left the stuff in there? If so why not just say so - you are more likely to get a result if you are straight.0 -

I've not suggested that for a reason. People on that board will encourage the op to dress the letter up, that won't work.0 -

I lost interest after reading the second line-far too long.0

OP, I think you should write to The Framley Examiner, and ask them to run your story.0

To all those posters who have had a go at the OP and made fun of him, you should try to remember that this guy has had a lot to cope with in the recent past and perhaps try very hard to imagine yourself living a day in his shoes.
I agree that his recount of the incident is over the top and contains too much info. and that this could possibly put the reader off taking his complaint seriously; his choice of the word "stolen" was also wrong. However, there are ways to get this point across without resorting to insults and pointless sniping.
Not everyone is out to make a fast buck from some minor inconvenience caused to them (unlike the silly woman who had no jam in her doughnuts) but this guy has suffered a loss and is entitled to some recompense. He's not asking for thousands for goodness sake:rolleyes: Not everyone knows how to complain and he was asking for advice. Cut him some slack.
I too hate the compensation culture that aflicts some sections of the polulation but on the other hand, the customer is often on the receiving end of shoddy service and mistakes made by retailers etc. (unless of course it's uktim's company who are clearly, completely blameless;) )0
