I guarantee my open fire looks better than most gas fires! I too have a gas fire in our dining room! We use logs on our open fire which we get for free so my bills are lower than gas fire bills!0

It might look better but sure as hell isnt given much heat, most people wont have a free/cheap supply of fuel. In fact logs have never been cheap and but are going up in price because of the demand for log burners they dont tell you that in a nice cosy showroom when you spend over 2k on a nice stove0
