Ybs To Charge Me £91 For Their Mistake

I've just had a letter from the Yorkshire Building Society about 4 cheques to the value of £91 I paid into my savings account in July - 4 months ago. The letter reads that unfortunately they have lost the cheques in processing. Further if I can't provide them with the cheque number, account number and sort code of the cheques they have lost within 21 days then they are going to debit my account of the amount.
Does anybody know where I stand legally on this. Can it be true that I am liable for them losing my cheques once I have paid them in?
They suggest I get the cheques reissued - but hey 6 months isn't up yet and the companies that drew the cheques want to levy an admin charge to redraw.
What should I do?

Not sure about the legalities but if they have lost your cheques and you have paying in stub then an official complaint is in order...what a cheek!0

I would agree that they are trying it on.
It is not really worth their time pursuing you for £91 and they should write it off especially as if they lost the cheques in the first place.
One letter politely advising them of this should be the end of the matter.0 -
Otherwise ask cheques to be reissued and then claim admin charges (if any) from YBS.0

I can hardly believe they'd have the cheek to write the letter. Surely the person writing it must have realised how unreasonable it is!
Try it the other way round. Go to their counter and withdraw £100. Five minutes later, go back and tell them you've lost the £100 somewhere "in processing" between your hand and your wallet, and would they please let you have another £100. Hmmm...0
