Liteon 5005 Problem

My above DVD recorder had developed a problem.

DVD +RW / -RW all work fine (play and record). Regardless if finalised or not for the -RW.

DVD +R which have been finalised play back OK.

DVD -R which have been finalised play back OK.

HOWEVER:

It no longer recognises blank +R or -R disks, tried several brands (the RW equivalents are OK).

The non W discs come up as either "Invalid Disk" or "No Disk". Tried each one several times

A -R disk which I recorded onto just a week ago is now an Invalid Disk on putting into machine (happened when inserted to add an extra episode of a program I won't name) and is not finalised (otherwise I wouldn't be able to add to it).

Why did the disk work last Saturday but not this one?

I have the latest firmware updates from January 2005 (nothing newer on Liteon site, I checked that the stuff on there is what I currently have).

Bought from Argos in November 2004, so just out of guarantee.

Should I just bin* this machine (where the colours are rather wishy washy anyway) and buy a better brand like a dual record (- and +) from the likes of SONY?

(* I mean demote to the back room, not literally bin it)
