ATM error 30th August

Hello,
Wondered if there was anyone that could give my sons girlfriend advice please. She's been on holiday, got back last night, she,s opened her mail today and lloyds TSB have sent her a letter, dated 6th October, saying that there has been a error and £100 that she withdraw from a ATM on 30th August had,nt registered, and so the bank was going to take the money out of her account on 21st October (today).

She genuinely did'nt realise the mistake and has every intention of paying it back, but she has.nt got the money to put in her account, untill she is payed at the end of the month.

My question is she was only 17 years old when the error was made,(she,s since turned 18), so would this give her any leveridge to be able to pay the money back in two or three installments.

Thank you
Sam

Can't her parents cover it and she pays them back? It's only £100.

Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

    No she does'nt.
She,s just checked her account and they've taken the £100 out of her account. So shes now £99 overdrawn!

you know it's going to be a case of live and learn. I would expect her to look to clear it ASAP, as I'm sure she will. The bottom line I suspect is that she had the money, and has the responsibility to pay it back.

However it would be good to know from Lloyds that they won't start the £30 charge per day per whatever. I don't know if they do this kind of thing, so I don't want to scaremonger. Also can she see the interest rate that is being applied?

I wish I was only £99 overdrawn. Or £999 overdrawn, or...oh dear... roll on payday...

Yes I agree only £99 overdraw would be lovely!

She,s going to pay £100 in tomorrow (my son's going too pay it), but she's so upset about. She's never been overdrawn or in debt before, She's going to ring Lloyds tomorrow and make sure that they don;t make any charges on her account.

Will £100 be enough? If she has incurred charges as a result then it won't be.

    What do other people think?

    Depends what type of account.

When I was 17 there was a mistake on my basic Halifax account and it went a few pounds overdrawn, they didn't charge me anything as it was a mistake, and that the account wasn't a current account and shouldn't be able to go overdrawn.

No. Age at the time of this happening makes no difference as it was a systems error and not Lloyds attempting to extend to her any sort of credit.

If she is charged, she should pay in enough to cover any overdraft and ask Lloyds to remove any charges as a gesture of goodwill due to the situation.

  • I had exactly the same happen to me!

I withdrew £20 from a cash point in the UK after returning from a business trip to Ireland on 30th August.

Looking through my bank statements it didn't register the transaction until 12th September, and the letter from Lloyds didn't reach me until sometime afterwards.

I took it to mean that although I got the cash, the account wasn't debited at the time like with a normal ATM withdrawl, it was debited (in my case) on the 12th Sept. I wasn't charged twice for this as I've double checked my online statements. So did your son's girlfriend withdraw the £100 twice? Therefore when they actually took the money it resulted in the account becoming £99 od.

What I mean is: Account was at +£101. She takes £100 but it doesn't show up on statement, then another day goes to ATM again and takes £100 again. This time it shows up as +£1 on statement. Then Lloyds realise the mistake and debit the 1st £100 leaving the account £99 od.

Anyway hope it all gets sorted out without any charges, at the end of the day the original mistake was theirs on the ATM side of things, so in my view they should waive any charges incurred by it.

    Best Regards,
    Graham
