Windows Mobile 5 advice needed

I have a samsung i600 with Windows Mobile 5 installed, supplied by Orange. Does anyone know of any freeware that would let me edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets?

Alternatively, does anyone know if it's possible to safely upgrade the handset to Windows Mobile 6 so that I can use the mobile version of Office?

I've Windows Mobile v5 on a PDA and it's got full mobile office, Word Mobile and Excel Mobile.

Did you have an accessories CD with the Samsung?

Same here. It originally had Windows Pocket PC 2003 and even that had the Pocket PC version of office.

Emerson, as for upgrading to WM6 that depends on Samsung. You'd have to check their site if they've written a version for it. When I upgraded to WM5 I had to wait for HP to make a specific version for my iPaq and then I had to pay for it. I'd love to have WM6 but they aren't releasing it for my model. There may be third party attempts to make them but they're both illegal and have a good chance of bricking your device.

mobile office is definitely not on handset or on CD. There is only an application called Picsel Viewer which will let me open Word docs but not edit them.

Actually it may be one of the differences between WM on a PDA and WM on a smartphone. So I'm guessing you'll have to either buy an office suite for it or see if you can download it from microsoft.com. I'm sure they used to offer Mobile Office 6 for WM5 depending on later versions of WM5 but you'll have to check.

Microsoft allow you to download directly from their website - I didnt have the old version of office mobile, just downloaded the new one and can open all the new file version (docx, xlsx etc etc) with no problems - just save the file and copy across to the phone through active sync:T:T
I have it running on my WM5 MDA Vario with no problems.

Upgrade doesn't work for WM5 unless the handset is touchscreen.

Have found a freeware application at http://www.vieka.com/wordpad.htm which lets me edit text files, although it's rather basic.

I remember trying it ages ago, it also doesn't work for WM5 older than a certain build number. So even with my HP iPaq PDA running the latest WM5 available for it couldn't actually install the Office mobile 6.
