Junk Mail

Hi

I have a Tiscali email account that seems to be attracting enormous amounts of junk mail (80-100 emails per day).

I have junk mail filters set up when I download them, but shouldn't Tiscali be doing more to try and stop them at source? So many of them are so clearly junk mail I would have thought it is in the ISP's interests to automatically delete them as soon as they enter the server.

Is there any easy way that I can delete the junk before it is downloaded?

MailWasher or MailWasher Pro...
• I'm with Tiscali as well, I also get hundreds of obvious spam all the time. I use MailWasher free but I agree that Tiscali should do more. I have asked them on the forums but they do nothing.

There are many reasons for having a google mail email account, the best spam / junk email filtering in the business is one of them. The spam folder on my account automatically clears out anything over 30 days old, I never bother just ignore it. There are 2186 spam emails in the spam folder right now, only 1 or 2 get in the inbox per month and I have never lost an email I want to receive in over 4 years.
You can continue with Tiscali as your ISP and use google mail anywhere you have access to the interne. If you really want to keep using Outlook with google mail you can, but after the first hour or so with the google mail web site one realises this is how email is meant to be managed and you never look back.

The worst thing about google mail is having to go back to using Outlook when you get to work....
• If I use Google email will I have to change my email address that I use on Outlook Express as I don't want the inconvenience of that. Thanks for your reply by the way.

There are all sorts of options open to you, such as using google mail to collect and send emails from any existing email addresses you have such as tiscalli. Outlook is just a tool for collecting and viewing emails from one (or more at the same time) email addresses.

The simplest option is to sign up for a google mail account, always use the google mail web site to deal with your emails (I do this) - that means you get to access your emails from anywhere there is an internet connection. Google mail also has built in virus scanning for attachments.
Once you are comfortable with how google mail is working start telling people to use your google mail email address and gradually phase out the use of your Tiscalli email address. One big advanatge of this is you can change internet service provider whenever you want and you never have to change email addresses again.
This is what google mail (Gmail in the USA) looks like:

I know that you just wanted to sort out a spam / junk email problem and you could just install someones software that helps to do it, it's just that the few I've tried seem so inadequate compared google mail - which is free!
• Thanks for this I will give it a try.

Google mail does sound good. Just wish Tiscali could actually be bothered to put some safeguards in place.
• Hello
I have been using "Spamfighter" recently and it seems to work well for me.

It's spam filtering is just the tip of the ice berg.
In google mail you don't have emails, you have conversations, emails belonging to a conversation are grouped onto one line. Emails are searchable using the well know google search engine. You can keep contacts, create labels to apply to emails based on rules, click on the label link to filter out just emails with that label applied (I have a label called M-S-E which gets applied automatically to emails from webmaster@moneysavingexpert.com so I can check through just MSE emails).....
I wax lyrical too much already, suffice to say it's the best thing on the web in my opinion and the small google ads that appear on the right side of the screen actually turn out to be very useful at times.

I agree
Gmail is the answer to email for all the reasons already stated - and many more.

Here's a couple more reasons:
• If you have Gmail and you change your ISP - no problem - you keep the same email address.
• The Gmail mailbox is huge - currently 7,254Mb - and increasing every day. So if you might want to keep an email - then keep it in the online archive. The Google search will find old emails if you use the right words!
