Freeview on portable tv

Hi,

This is probably a silly question......
If I use a freeview box with a portable tv (no external aerial) does that mean that the picture will improve?

Thanks.

  • freeview uses the signal picked up from your aerial so the likelyhood is it'll get worse as the signal you're picking up isn't good enough for the freeview box.

Aaah... I was thinking it was a good way of getting a decent signal. :wall:

Our bedroom portables are not worth watching.

It'll either be a MUCH better signal, or you'll get nothing at all.

Generally though it'll be the latter as DTT needs a stronger signal to maintain a stable picture than ordinary terrestrial broadcasts.

If the problem you're having is a weak signal (grainy picture) as opposed to ghosting then you'd be better off buying a cheap signal amplifier for the TV. These can sometimes work very well.

yea it probably won't work at all, you need a high gain external aerial or a normal external aerial with a booster attached before you can pick up the digital signal.

worth it though - just gone digital can highly recomend it.

argos do a small internal digital aerial,

another suggestion is buying a small external digital aerial and keeping it under the bed!!!! - worth a try.

Always worth checking here first to check the reception in your area:-

Personally speaking, I have had a FV box for the last 3 months and can honestly say it is the best £30 I have ever spent on electrical goods.
I used to get a decent enough reception b4 on analogue (Apart from Channel 5 which was a little grainy at times) but since going to FV reception is perfect on all channels, new and old.
I have a portable telly in my bedroom FYI.
The benefits also include BBCi(Where u can watch archived news footage, extra sport etc), digital teletext without the screen looking like a Pac Man game, Sky Sports News (Including Soccer Saturday), Sky News, E4, Channel 4, E4+1, ITV 2,3,4, BBC 3, 4 amongst many others, including digital radio.
What I would say is, check the reception website and if it is good in your area, get one, they are amazing value.
(For info, I got the Digibox one from Tekkos at £30)

If reception is poor on all channels at the moment, you may not see any improvement, and may have to get an external aerial as well. If it is only one or two, and particularly Channel 5 which is broadcast with less signal strength, then it will probably improve these - it does for 5 here.
