Does it just lose power, and you lose all your work, or does it go into a shutdown or suspend?
If the former, Remove the battery and clean the contacts, make sure it's firmly back in the laptop, ensure it's fully charged. If it doesn't hold a full charge for long (often the case with older laptops) try and use it plugged into the mains to ensure it won't run flat.
Have you checked the Sony Vaio support to see if it's a know issue? They might have a solution or even a firmware patch to run on the system to solve it.0 -

Is it getting too hot?0

If it's Vista, then it might be the power settings. Mine switched off whenever I closed the lid..

I have the same problem with my Vaio (XP). It tends to happen when I try to close the lid to activate the hibernate mode. Sometimes the lights dont go out and upon lifting the lid it says it can't carry out the required task due to system resource or something similar.
I then have to put the system into standby before closing the lid.
Next time I open up the lid if I am on the laptap for say an hour the whole system just switches itself off.0
