UnknownGas Suppiler

Hi,

I am new to this so I may miss a few things out. Basically I moved in to a new rented property in April and I have been trying to find out who provides my Gas. British Gas supplys the Electric but they have told me they can not switch me over to them for the Gas as they can not see who supplies me. I have called Transco and they have said the same that they can not see who is supplying us. The house is about 5 years old and sometimes companies cannot find my address (the house number has a c on the end). When I moved in N Power were supplying us with both but now whe I call them they do not supply either anymore. I have not received a Gas bill since moved in and am worried that I will receive a huge Gas bill anytime. I am really worriedas I am struggling with money at the moment. Can anyone suggest anyting for me to do?
Thanks

If you find an old gas bill from NPower it will list the Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN), using this National Grid Transco should be able to advise who the current supplier is.

  • Yes I have gave this to Transco a few times but they cn not see wo supplys me. They did say to tell British Gas to just start me off with them but I a worried about getting another bill for the last 7 month
  • There is also an outside chance that your gas is transported by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT) so National Grid would not hold a record of the supplier.

You could check with a neighbour and if their transporter isn't National Grid, it is likely yours won't be either.

the information held by all the above and national grid is supplied to them by the gas suppliers, by all means find the mrpn number if you can and that may help find it as sometimes the address supplied by the suppliers is different from the actual address as you know it.

If they still cannot find it speak to any supplier of choice and advise them that you have spoken to national grid and/or appropiate gas transporter for your area and that no details are held, then request that they generate a new mprn number and you can then register a supply with them.
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.

You dont want them to generate a new MPRN if you have one from an old bill. Just call the supplier of your choice and ask them to be your supplier. When they try and register it, it will show there is no old supplier. This may have occured because the previous supplier did what is called a 'voluntary withdrawl' which in effect leaves the MPRN with no supplier.

  • If you have your MPRN, and it starts with 73, 74, 75, 76 (usually with a 7) then your are an IGT customer. Transco definately do not hold information on the supplier in this case. If there is no supplier (a "Shipperless Supply"), you can just choose one to take you over, but will need to be quick as is there is consumption detected you may get letters advising you to pick a supplier or they can disconnect the meter!

Meanwhile, read your meter, calculate how much you have used and will have to pay for and save! Budget for the gas you are going to use this winter. It's no good saying you're worried there will be a huge bill and that you are struggling with money if you are using gas and not paying for it.

If you are struggling with money, draw up a budget and work out how much you can afford for gas/elec and adapt your usage accordingly. Keep checking your meters and include a monthly amount in your budget to clear the bill that could arrive at any time for gas used since April. Put this in an interest earning account and leave it there.
