A mountain

Ok, the rugby league season is all but over now and my Saturdays are destined to be either a sixth work day, a day sat drinking in the conservatory or something constructive. My children go to their mothers on Saturdays which means i have a day to waste. I have decided to take up walking and i want to climb a mountain this weekend.
Years and years ago when i was younger i used to enjoy walking in the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District. But its really been some time. Im the sort of person who drives round car parks for ages trying to get a space closer to the elevator.
Im situated near Wakefield and dont mind a drive of about 90 miles or so. But can anyone recommend a mountain i can go and explore? In terms of fitness im probably above average since i have played RL my whole life and still do.
I would love to find somewhere genuinely breathtaking in every sense of the word.
Many thanks.

Hi Stur11
I've done exactly this myself this year. I've taken up walking again mainly in the Lake District.I'm lucky as I can be there in half an hour so it's quite handy.
A couple of things first. The clocks change soon so bare that in mind when planning your walk. Also have a look at the weather forecast the day before. Here is a link to one of the best mountain weather forecast's
https://www.mwis.org.uk/forecast.php?area=6
The 'Holy Grail' in the Lakes is to do Helvellyn via Striding Edge ( 3118 feet) Probably the most breathtaking and one of the most exciting of 'walkers routes'. It's a walk of around 8 miles but to be avoided in gales or icy conditions.
I try to get up the mountains at least once a month and would be happy to walk with you on one of the routes. The popular mountains are busy at weekends so best to do the walk mid week if you can.
Lots more to share with you so send me a PM for more info.0 -
this ain't no mountain but it sure is breathtaking and that's the area around the stiperstones and devils chair area in Shropshire - not sure how far away it is from you but it really is stunning there

Hi,
I don't know your area well but a couple of hints:
Start easy and short, you can always do longer days out later. The fitness needed for a day on the hill can be quite different to that for sports.
Much better to have a few easy days to see how you get on than to find yourself knackered a long way from the car!
Get a map and compass and know how to use them, do NOT rely only on a gps and mobile phone! Its also a good idea to practice using them even if it is clear.
See if you can find a club in your area - they will be able to give you advice and company on the hills if you want it
And most of all have fun and take care0 -
Thanks some very encouraging and interesting info there.
Tony im going to send a PM to you. Very interested in your offer thank you :beer:0 -
I was a keen walker and climber in my youth and still try and get out for the odd walk nowadays. I don't know the area you live in but the peak district should be well within reach and has tremendous walking, not really mountians as such but places like Kinder Scout are marvelous. Other than that there's the Lake District or the Howgills and you've also got the North Yorkshire moors. It might be a bit far for you but my favourite area is North Wales.
Whatever you do though make sure you are well prepared and know how to use a map and compass. This is a great time of year for walking as the hills tend to be quieter but the weather can change quickly.
A couple of sites that may help are
www.outdoorsmagic.com lots of information and advice and a good forum.
www.walkingbritain.co.uk which has lots of suggested routes. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0
