I need to know if there are any free software I can download to use with photographs. The main thing I would like to do is change the background.

I dont know of any decent FREE ones personally. Theres quite a few free BASIC editors, but thats all they are.
Personally I use photoshop, but thats a tad expensive to buy.

You could try paint.net.
or you can get some good old version of Serif Software for freeIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
The crops up several times a week, do a search for image editors, photo editing software etc
