Can my supplier backdate charges?
Options
My supplier Scottish Power wrote to me dated October 2008, saying that they have held their prices down for as long as possible (noble of them) but now they have to put up their prices. The letter said the price hike will be from August 2008. Can they backdate a price raise and charge me more for gas and electric which I have already used. Surely its illegal?
If I'd have known in August I could've moved supplier.

Suppliers now have 65 working days from the date of the increase to advise you of this.
If you tell them within 10 working days of receiving the notice that you want to end your contract and get your new supplier to apply within a further 15 working days then the new prices will not be applied.
If you or your new supplier don't keep to the timescales above then the new prices will be applied.0 -
I think the subject has been covered very recently in this sub forum and they are allowed 65 working days after the change to notify you.:)0

You know now, and you can still move supplier, and not suffer the increase. You don't lose out because of the 65 days - indeed, you benefit, because you can pay the old price for around 90 days after the increase was effective, until the point when you actually switch to the new supplier.0
