leak in oil filled radiator over carpet

Any tips on getting rid of both the oil and the smell off a carpet from a leak in a oil filled radiator.

I recently bought a couple of oil filled radiators from Argos.

Yesterday morning my wife noticed a strong smell of creasote or something in the hallway. I checked it out and it was very strong, to the extent it was making your eyes water. We have an old economy 7 radiator in the hall which had been on for 4 weeks. It looked the culprit. I checked it, touched it, smelled it etc and it didn't seem to be coming from there. I checked upstairs to find the childrens room, immediately above the hallway stunk of the same stuff. I was beginning to panic because I couldn't work what the smell was, gas/electrical etc nor could I find exactly where it was coming from. I knocked on next doors house incase it was coming from there but there was no answer. I called my father in law for both a second opinion as well as to make sure i wasn't imaging things.
He came round and thought there may be a smell of the same in the street and it was getting through the windows at the front of the house. (Useless info).
I called my Landlord and he came down and was baffled as well.
Becasue we assumed it was coming from the hall and the culprit being the radiator in the hall, he called the electrician who couldn't make it till last night.
So he came down, checked the electrics on the heater, the sockets in the hall and the doulble bedroom with no luck.
He was just about to go when he noticed one of the oil filled radiators in my front room and wondered if one of the kids had knocked it over, i said no, and nor the one in the bedroom.
Then he checked the one in the bedroom to find there was a leak on the base of it and oil was all over the carpet.
The radiator hadn't been on that night.
So it seems that the heat from the downstairs of the house had risen upstairs through the floorboards and the oil has been giving off the smell.
I couldn't let the kids (3 and 2) stay in their bedroom last night so they had to sleep downstairs on the settee's with me on the floor between them.
Meanwhile I've got the windows wide open (in winter!!)

I'll be getting on to Argos about this as the manuals you get with the radiators give no manufacturers contact details.

Oh that's awful. I'm not sure how you would clean it up. Can you claim it through your insurance?

I hope you can get rid of some of the smell before the kids bedtime.

Hopefuly others may be able to help with getting rid of the oil/smell.
