Mast Cell Tumour in a Dog

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for some advice on a rather horrible subject i'm afriad. My 5 year old pug Missy, has recently been diagonised with a Mast Cell Tumour on her front paw, we noticed it very quickly so she had it removed and the results came back as a very low grade 2 on it.

It has only been 2 weeks since that op and i noticed a new growth on the same paw but on the opposite side by the dew claw, i rushed her to the Vets this morning, and he thinks it is probably a bone that is more pominent now as the skin is tighter on that paw, plus the fact that it is a very hard lump, not soft like the previous tumour.

He is not willing to run anymore tests and just wants to keep an eye on it, but this is what he said to me on the first ever visit with the tumour, it was only at my persitance that he ran some tests.

I now would like to take her to see a specialist, but have no idea on where to find a highly recommended one for this type of Cancer? If any of you have any experience with these tumours or know of a good specialist i would be very grateful for your info.

Sorry about your Missy not being well!
If you want to see a specialist just ask(tell) your vet to refer you.....I hope she is insured though as it's not cheap.

TBH what comes across in your post is that you don't really trust your vet.....would it be worth changing vets?

Davies Vet Specialists in Hertfordshire - excellent oncology team and super surgeons. Northwest Surgeons in Cheshire. Vet cancer centre in Essex, Edinburgh University. Pet cancer centre in Yorkshire. Dont know where you are but I could recommend any of the above.

my dog had 3 cancerous lumps last year we found one and the vet just thought it was fat till we insisted that he tested her, and it was cancer she was in within 48 hours they checked her for more and found 2 more she had them removed and is right as rain now

Dogs are strong creatures try not to worry too much hun

Either ask for a referral or go to a different vet for a second opinion.

Can't offer any advice re specialists, as my local vet did all the necessary treatments etc, but mine had 2 mast cell tumours removed over a year ago, and fingers crossed there's been no spread/recurrence so far. Hope the same goes for your Missy, but as others have said, if you're not happy with the vets response, then for your own peace of mind try elsewhere.
