Unknowingly parking in disabled space!.....help

Hi all,

Recently i started a new job and smashed my finger on my second day there!, on the thursday i had an appointment at the hospital to have an operation and i was also at work the same morning, i got away a bit late and rushed into town to catch my appointment, along side the hospital there is a whole road full on one side of parking bays, i drove up the road and found a spot right next to a parking meter which i thought was great as i was running late. I bought an all day ticket as i did not know how long i would be in the hospital i think it cost me about £8 and stuck it in the window, later that afternoon i returned to my car to find a ticket on my windscreen!, i promptly rang the number on the ticket and the woman asked me where ir it was richardson road where i got the ticket immediately!, that was the road i was on. She then informed me that the ticket was for parking in a disabled space and that alot of people had been charged for this. I looked around the area where my car was and could find no obvious road marking or sign to say that the space i was in was disabled i explained this to the woman and she agreed and told me to write a letter to them explaining this. Which i did. I recieved a reply with various pictures of my car and the parking meter directly in the backround and also a tiny sign with two arrows on it, one arrow to the left said disabled free and something about a fixed penalty but nothing obvious to say i couldnt park there with a ticket, and to the right pay and display. Obviously i had parked directly to the left of the meter. The letter from them basically said tuff! and that i would have to pay the charge which i dont think i should have to, i now have a court summons for thursday coming and i would like to know what chances i'd have if i fought this, after all the sign above the pay and display saying pay here is massive, but the sign to say you'll be charged if you park in certain bays is absolutely tiny.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Joseph
