I was ooking at a pc that supposedly cost £3K to build,but when i priced up all the parts they only came to £1647newor near £1000 with a combo of new/used parts which got me thinking,could i build a system of identical or near identical spec as that one for even cheaper.
So heres a few new parts prices i got and would like to see if anyone on here can better them,
motherboard = ASUA A8N SLi £107
chip = amd 3800+ dualcore £250(£150isebay)
ram = 1024(2x 512) Corsair ddr55 £150(£60-£80ebay)
gr. card/s = 2X MSI 7800 GTX £600
asetex waterchill kit = I THINK IT WAS £200 NEW £?????
16X DVD = ANYMAKE £30-£60????
PSU = Seasonic 600w £80
Case = Coolmaster Stalker £110
XP = £120(ebay shop)
H/Drives = 2x samsung spinpoints £120
The system was overclocked to 4400+ and watercooled
No doubt i prob missed something out,so can anyone get these parts for cheaper.Note i dont obviously need two gr.cards but was just seeing what it cost to build new.(-£300 for 1 gr.card = £1347ish new)

Out of interest, where are you thinking of buying a GTX for £300? I recently made a similar PC ... 2GB of ram, amd 4400+ but only 1 spinpoint and 1 7800GT ... cost about £1300 .... so your prices seem about right.
The only thing I'd think about changing is the ram. To get fast (1T) timings on the amd chip, you can only have 2 sticks of ram. Buying 2GB now may pay off in the future (especially if you are into things like BF2).
Good luck, and don't underestimate the cost of additional stuff ... I think I spent about £60 on fans/accessories (though I did replace every fan in the case with ultra-quiet ones). And if you're worried about noise, get a gfx card which allows you to swap out the cooler without voiding the warranty.

Try this site for help with specs and prices, the guys are great:

It's important to know what you're going to end up using your PC for really to give you a better idea of what sorts of components to use.
Your spec looks fine at first glance - check the latency of your RAM though, it'll say something like CAS 2.5 in the description. The lower the better - got for a 2.0 if you can spot one. You're right that you only need one graphics card. With an SLI system, you can add a second IDENTICAL card later if you want even better performance - and of course by then the price will have dropped. I'd see how you get on first with one myself. Newer SLI mainboards allow you to use the same graphics card, but they don't have to be identical.
I'm sure that buying components on Ebay is usually okay, but I've ended up getting stung on there personally by buying used RAM and a graphics card which have been faulty and turned out to have been overclocked first (badly)
so just be cautious if that's what you're planning.
Your best bet for a first bulid is to stick to reputable well established sites for your purchases, like Ebuyer, Aria, Scan, Overclockers etc etc. Your price for XP sounds way over the odds - Ebuyer have XP Home for around £59 inc VAT (OEM Version - you need to buy some hardware along with it).
Your system's going to pack a fair old punch once up and running!
