Can anyone tell me why there isn't a comparison site for the social tariffs of all the companies so that those of us on a social tariff can shop around for the best deal? If there already is a site out there that does this can you please post the link? I am sure I am not the only one who would like this service.

I presently have the British Gas Essentials electricity tariff @ 14.901p(inc. vat) for first 125 kwh then 9.849p(inc. vat) for the rest. I have the Atlantic Electric & Gas Energyplus Care gas tariff @ 1.930p(inc. vat) per unit and 11.690p(inc. vat) per day standing charge.

I pay both by direct debit fixed amounts each month with paperless bills.

  • Hi,

It looks like your on a good deal at the moment and should stay where you are.

I think it depends whether the companies want to release their social rates to the comparison sites but also how would you stop people applying online who are not eligible for the social tariffs?

I do agree with you though, either the comparison sites build the social tariffs into their websites or a new website altogether is made :)

  • I am energy assist with Edf, its not easy to really see what the other companies are doing, my rates are..
    meb 16.83p 1st 225kwhs then 11.43p
    Gas 6.248p 1st 670kwhs then 2.727p

It seems your electric is cheaper, can never work things out when standing charges apply which is why I have not changed suppliers a yet, maybe its a case of phoning around the top 5 looking at what they do, the above inc vat and d/d.

I presently have the British Gas Essentials electricity tariff @ 14.901p(inc. vat) for first 125 kwh then 9.849p(inc. vat) for the rest. I have the Atlantic Electric & Gas Energyplus Care gas tariff @ 2.10p(inc. vat) per unit and 11.65p(inc. vat) per day standing charge.

I pay both by direct debit fixed amounts each month with paperless bills.[/quote]

I spoke with Atlantic after making the first post I had to go back and amend it to an even cheaper price for my gas. They comfirmed that my tariff has NOT increased since May '08. They also convinced me to go ahead and leave British Gas for their electricity as it would work out cheaper to have duel fuel with them. Basically with Atlantic's social tariff they take 20% off the UNIT prices and then you have the additional standing charge. By getting duel fuel they deducted another 3% off the gas unit charge. This makes my new duel tariff with Atlantic as follows:

    Electric- 9.44p per unit(vat inc.),10.14p standing charge(vat inc.)
    Gas- 1.8721p per unit(vat inc.), 11.690p standing charge(vat inc.)

I have requested all of this in writing to avoid future confusion if I need to deal with them. I have to say I DO prefer Atlantic's customer service who are friendly, BRITISH, and don't keep you hanging on hold for ages :T unlike British Gas who are dreadful and appear frequently on Watchdog:rotfl:
  • what phone number is used for atlantic? and the standing charge confuses me does it really work out cheaper that edf & British gas as I thought the standing charge was per day.

I believe it would be difficult to create a comparison site for social tariffs due to the varying eligibility requirements of each company.

And the fact that some of the companies require proof of eligibilty before letting you onto a social tariff.

I think you may have missed my point. I myself qualify for any and all social tariffs at the moment and would like somewhere to go to find out all of the social tariff rates so that I may make a comparison.
When I spoke to the people at Atlantic yesterday they compared my current social tariff with British Gas for my electric and they were able to beat it so I switched to Atlantic on the spot and now have duel fuel with them.
