Problems with laptop...software issue

My husband's Acer laptop has basically given up the ghost. Vista won't start up at all.

He took it back to Comet this morning who told him to ring Acer, which they did dial at the store for him.

Acer are saying that they do not cover software issues and he can send it back but there be a minimum charge of £100

The laptop was purchased at the end of January this year.

I was under the impression that Comet have to resolve this issue as we purchased the laptop from them.

Any advice welcome!

  • No doubt, as its a software issue then they will charge as well. I suggest you repost on the techie thread and I'm sure someone will be along to help you.

To be fair to both Comet and Acer, the majority of computer problems are user generated. This is why they are being cagey about it and talking £££ to fix.

If you could post something more detailed, its quite possible it could be sorted via these forums.
Does it power up? What does the screen show? etc etc
  • Just a general wondering from me. How do they know it is a software issue if it's not doing anything? I had a similiar problem with my Acer after it hibernated then refused to come back on. The problem was a duff memory stick. I took it out and left it with only one other stick and it booted

I agree with Pssst & Peter, put your problem on the tech forum here and see if anyone can help before you resort to paying out

Because when people say it doesn't do anything can actually mean it does do a multitude of things.

If it really doesn't do anything the first thing to check is the fuse in the plug.

Acer are probably of the opinion that it is more likely Vista has given up the ghost rather than the laptop.

exactly, which is why I wonder how they can diagnose a software problem? They haven't seen the laptop to know either way. I guess to say it's a software fault, means it's not the laptop, ie their product, that is to blame.

Both the hinges on my laptop snapped and for Acer to repair - no diagnosis, just repair - would have cost me £50 p&p, £40 labour and £24 for the parts. I bought the parts for £24 from their centre and fitted them myself. Hence I'm generally wary of repair centres!
