sorry to be thick but never bought dvd before and now am confused about what region i need i live in england?

Many separate DVD players can be hacked to allow the playback of DVDs from any region, and there is free software available so that DVDs from any region can be played back on your PC. A quick trawl of the web via a search engine should yield some results.
As phatbear says, DVD region 2 covers the UK.0
