Hey Charlie, I asked a similar question in another part of the website but replies wre varied. I am sending an offer of 38% to my two CCs on Monday i.e. debts of £7.4k and £5.4k on two HBOS CCs.

i wanted to do the same i have £6800 owing to lloyds credit card and £8800 to halifax loan when i contacted them for for a settlement figure at discounted rate they both said they would not give discounted rate they wanted 100%, even when i said this then would lead me to bankruptcy and so they would not get anything although did not add last bit they said the same, both of these debts were now after only being 2 months behind with collections so dont know if that made any difference or not?

Hi, ive had a lightbulb moment and decided to get my debts in hand.

While I can budget and pay off three of my cards im struggling to meet the minimum repayment on my Amex (just above £100) and the monthly interest eats (approx £70) into whatever ive paid off the month before. I dont spend on the card anymore and the balance stands at just short of £4500.

Can you advise what my best course of action would be? Im a student with no income apart from student loans and dla.

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) has several counsellors answering questions in our forum. There are three ways to contact them:

1 - To ask them a question please post it below and someone will post a reply here.

2 - If you would prefer to ask a question in private you can send a private message to CCCS Private Messages, and one of the Counsellors (Matthew, Sarah, Alan, Sue or Amanda) will get back you.

3 - CCCS's Debt Remedy is an online tool where you can chat to a counsellor anonymously and ask questions as you work through a budget plan.

January 2007 I was having financial problems and I had been listening to Martin Lewis on Jeramy Vines show, on radio 2 for a couple of years. I decided to take up the advice given. I rang c.c.c.service and I got a date back when someone would ring me, a really nice guy guided me through the do's and dont's of my debt situation and drew me up a budget plan. He told me if I stuck to it I would be debt free February 2009! So I bought a spiraled bound note book and kept a track off all my spending. Christmas 2007 was the first xmas I had payed for in cash since 2001!! I was on a roll. I now budget for everything and u guessed it yep it's Feb 2009 and I'm debt free!!! Even though my debt was only a couple of grand I new I was over spending. Am glad I rung and you can do it 2!!!

  • Please help!

I have recently inherited enough money to pay off my Administration Order, but when I called to get a figure, I was told that it had been revoked, and all debts handed back to original companies.

I have now checked my credit report, as suggested by CCCS on phone, and none of these debts are listed! I have changed addresses with banks as I have moved, so am surprised that they haven't caught up with me!

Does this mean that I don't owe them anymore?

Only if, during the past six years, you have not made any payments and they have not contacted you at all. I assume this is response to last night's 'Watchdog'? That statement they made about not being able to chase debts that are more than six years old was pretty misleading!

I agree, it was a little misleading! There seems to be an influx of people now thinking that any debt they've had over 6 years is now unenforceable. Topbadger is corret in stating that a debt only becomes Statute Barred once no payment has been made for 6 years, and there has been no attempt from the creditor to contact the debtor for the same timescale. For some mortgage shortfalls after repossessions, the timescale is extended to 12 years.

    Matthew.

  • Help!

My husband and myself phoned CCCS today regarding our debts of 37K. he has no job at the moment due to lack of work around in our area...and although we have struggled through up until now without missing payments we are no longer going to be able to may the payments on one wage.

They said to phone all our creditors and ask them to put our credit card accounts on hold for 28 days until we have our meeting with CCCS in two weeks time - which after this we will phone them back & update them on the situation.

We started the horrible task of doing this , however when it came to phoning MBNA they were extremely rude - even though i had been a customer for over 12 years with not one missed payment. The lady said that she could not put the account on hold & that she had now put a barr on it & i was to send the cards back to MBNA??????????? She also continued to say that with MBNA the debt will stay with us on record for 16 YEARS!!!!!! and will also effect us being able to get motor insurance.

Can someone please advise is this really the case?????????

Also i need advise on how to make jesture payments & when these should be made. ONe of the accounts is egg and is done over the internet...so can i just make a payment by debit card?

Can some one help....it has been a very difficult time getting to this point but i know that we are on the right track no matter how diffcult it may be at least we are now trying to deal with our debt problems.
