Benefit advice please

I am a single parent on benefits.
My brother is having a hard time at the moment and he is finding it hard to live on his own. He lost his job and is on incapacity benefit after having a breakdown.
Can he live with me for a while, till he gets himself straight?
Will it affect my benefits at all?
He will pay his way and share the bills, I know that and he doesn't drink or smoke.
I will tell the benefits people and housing benefit, but I don't want him to move in then we both end up worse off.
I asked him to wait till I find out the ins and outs first.
I would feel safer as well, having him here.
Thanks for any help.

http://www.tameside.gov.uk/housingbenefit/nondependentdeductions should help. You may need to pay a small amount towards the rent but I can't see it being a lot, probably much cheaper than him living alone to be honest.
One day I might be more organised...........

Thanks for the help. I will look at that link in a minute.
To be honest, he needs someone to feed him, as he isn't eating properly.
He can have proper meals with us.

Sounds like your brother might be entitled to DLA as well.

Just wanted to say he's fortunate having you as a sister
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!

Sorry but theres nothing to suggest from whats been said that DLA might be appropiate:confused:
But he`s certainly lucky to have a sister who cares about him:T

He's had a breakdown and he's not eating properly.

This gives me the impression that the effects of his mental health means he might well meet the conditions for DLA. Often not eating is also a sign that other areas of life are neglected such as washing, dressing, communicating with others, dealing with 'officialdom' such as responding to letters etc etc. Needing frequent encouragement from others is one of the conditions

    Thanks for the lovely comments.
Our parents died years ago, so it's only me and him now.
He is clean and tidy that's no problem. Just hate seeing him so down.
    Thanks for the help.

Regards the DLA, i think he would need to be pushed to try for it, as I have heard it's very stressful to apply for.
He is seeing someone from the CAB next week about some debts. I will ask him to get some advice from his case worker then.

Good idea jonty. He might even get the low rate care based on the fact that his condition means he finds it difficult to plan, prepare and cook a main meal.

...and thanks for the response woodbine. My job as an advisor means I always read between the lines !!
