HELP! need to make greek costume asap

Hi I have just found a screwed up letter in the bottom of my sons school bag saying it is 'greek day' this Wednesday and he needs to wear greek costume, I really cannot afford to buy anything so want to try and make something. I know I can go down the toga route but to be honest have no idea how to fold/cut the sheet and also don't want anything too long as he has to wear it all day. Normally manage to put my own costumes together but normally have a bit more time...oh and to add to things I have a stinking cold and headache and just feel like going back to bed.

  • I have an idea. This would be along similar lines to the greek dolls you can buy on holiday.

1 Dad's old shirts - take collar off, make sure the sleeves look puffy.
borrow old waistcoat - denim or any dark colour
Tuck a pair of trousers in girls knee-high socks.
Make a sash out of old satin ribbon.
They have funny shoes and hats I know. So try using felt to cover your son's shoes or trainers. If you have any old wool you could make a pompom to put on the end or children's crafts using have them, and use the same felt to make a hat - I think it looks something like a "wee willy winkie" hat with a pompom on the end.

I hope you get what I mean. I'll try and find something on the web to illustrate the picture.

  • I looked on the internet under greek costumes.

They had the usual greek toga's and they also showed the national dress which is something like what I said before but instead of the trousers's, they are wearing white skirts. Which if your son is like mine, wouldn't be seen dead in a skirt!! There are some like this

You can just make out man's outfit carrying banner.

Is this Greek as in Greek National Costume, or Greek as in Ancient Greek?

Ancient Greek might be sandals or simple shoes with ribbons or laces up the lower leg, and tunic - cut sleeves out of an old plain t-shirt, tie with leather or fabric belt. Probably want leggings under that, if he'll wear leggings, or thick tights with the feet cut off.

Short cloak from an old single colour curtain if he's posh Ancient Greek.

Of course, if he went as a Greek athlete he wouldn't wear anything at all! :rotfl:

Hope I'm not too late. Greek costumes seem to pop up a lot! I've saved this page to my favourites

Another thought is whether the letter remained buried because he doesn't want to dress up ... do ask before going to a huge effort!

Hi no it wasn't that he didn't want to, thanks for the replys it was ancient Greece and I made a greek warrior costume, used a old leather jacket cut up to make a pleated 'skirt' type thing and also made some arm and leg guards using cardboard, tin foil and some more leather will post a pic as hard to explain. thanks again peeps.
