Consumer Rights.

Can anyone tell me if i have any right in the following situation?

14 Days ago i had cable television installed by Virgin Media. Exactly 14 days after the installation the box has developed a fault and several chanells are now missing, they say it's not a fault thier end and must be the box that's faulty.

The problem is they are telling me if they send an engineer out i'll have to pay. Surely this cannot be right? If thier equiptment is faulty within 14 days of installation do i not have any rights as a consumer to expect them to pay the engineer if thier product is at fault? Am i covered by any consumer rights with this?

  • Hi, the sale of goods act states that an item must be fit for purpose and that it should last a reasonable amount of time. 14 days is quite clearly not reasonable. As I understand it you actually rent the box from Virgin, therfore it belongs to them and as such any repairs are down to them. I would call them back and state that the box is not fit for purpose and therefore they have a legal duty to repair or replace the item at their cost. If they refuse report to trading standards.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards Simon

Thank you Simon. I have been back onto Virgin Media & explained that as the box is not fit for purpose and has developed a fault within just 14 days i am not prepared to pay for an engineer to repair thier own faulty equiptment, this time they were more helpful & have arranged for someone to come round tomorrow to resolve the problem at no cost to myself (well i'll believe it when i see it!)
  • Glad it's sorted ;)
