Wire stuck in washing machine

Options
We have a washer / dryer.

An underwire came out of my bra in a load of washing I did at the end of last week. It's not sticking through the drum, so I can't pull it out.

But it is catching on the drum when the machine is going, you can hear it.

Is it possible to get it out or do I need a washing machine repair man?

The drum is inside the outer casing, held at the back by a big bearing, and has the rubber gasket you can see at the front.
The only way in is to take off the rubber gasket, and even then it may be hard to get at the wire.
The wire may stay where it is forever, or may wash down into the emptying pump.
Personally, if it was mine, I'd leave it where it is, until the machine stopped working. (Unless it was a very dear machine, or brand new).
I'm not suggesting you do this, as equally the wire could wear through the drum, and that would be expensive to repair, if not scrap the machine.
Get a price for the repair man to come out.
Depending where you are I'd think above £45 to £75

Go to your local spares shop and get a new heater gasket for your machine. Remove the heater after isolating from the mains - put your hand in and remove the wire and then replace the heater with new gasket .

If you do not do this the likelyhood is that the wire will eventualy wear through the heater element as this is where it will be lodged and your machine could become " LIVE " when filled with water and on the heat cycle !

  • Good advice there shammyjack thats what I would do. Easier access too might want to try removing the the outer door seal and retrieve with a magnet but small area to work in.

I keep reminding the wife to hand wash her bra's as it says on the box. They only need a quick soak in the sink anyway.
  • Thanks very much, all.

Life is too short to hand-wash bras, though!

Place them in one of the special washing bags meant for delicate items or in a pillow case.... its then harder for the wire to escape into the drum, which seems a common problem.

remove the front seal and use an old bent wire coathanger to retrieve the wire.
hard work but can be successful.
only other way is to remove the whole drum from the rear. a big job and will cost a
fair bit, if not doing DIY.
    Get some gorm.
  • In the end I popped into a washing machine repair workshop a few minutes from where we live. He nipped round to look at it today, and took it out of hose, and checked all the rest for damage (none) and charged £35. Bargain, for central London, I think!

Many thanks for all your help.
