Your Friend Is Right, The Council Will Remove It But It Will Cost You.

a normal contractor can remove asbestos sheet if it is bagged as it is a low grade hazard.

Look in yellow pages for asbestos removers.

sheets are a low grade hazard as they are not loose fibres

It is now illegal to remove the sheets yourself unfortunately, even though they are low-grade asbestos/cement.

You must use a licensed contractor to remove and dispose.
I would be interested to see you legal basis for this claim. It may not be advisable for an inexperienced person to DIY replacing an asbestos garage roof but I doubt very much if it is illegal. It would be illegal to pay someone else to do it who wasn't a properly licensed person for this type of work but I am not aware of any legislation that prevents me from removing asbestos in a proper manner from my own premises.

If there were such legislation I doubt YORK CCwould set out the working practices you should adopt for such a task

It is however generally better to leave the stuff where it is. When my daughter's Asbestos roofed garage was leaking I put a Corrugated roof over it and lined it underneath with plastic sheeting. Providing you leave the stuff alone and don't break saw or drill it, it should do no harm.

  • I agree with Ted here. Read this site http://www.asbestoswatchdog.co.uk/

Basically low grade asbestos is safe if you use common sense, try not to smash it up, work in damp conditions, double bag it and call the council, they will have a set site and day for delivery. It is heavy mind you!

  • I disposed of my garage asbestos sheets a couple of years ago and the local council provided some large bags to put the pieces in. They then collected it for free but took them a few weeks to collect.

I had a local company who came and gave me a quote in access of £500 for doing this job.

Glad the council came in use.

    Good luck
