Standby Tickets

Does anyone know the best way to get standyby flights? Do you just turn up at the airport and hope for the best? Want two tickects to New York anytime from July 5th for a week. At the moment they are all around £450 ish.....any ideas?

i tried that about 2 years ago - showed up at the airport looking for a ticket to San Diego but tickets varied betwee 1000 to 2500 pounds. I checked with all the airlines and no one was willing to fill an empty seat for a reasonable price so I went into the city centre and got a flight for about 400 quid to leave the next morning.

This site might be useful tho - companies subsidise your flight but you give up your space in the hold to ship stuff on their behalf (they;re responsible for the contents) so it's hand luggage only:

also beware that standby really does mean standby. I was 'unfortunate' enough to be on standby as American Airlines crew went on strike a few years ago whilst in Hawaii, sitting around an airport for 24 hours running from one check in desk to the next is not a great experience and that was only to get back to the mainland and a further standby flight
