Wireless problem

Hi there helpers,
I originally had a desktop and tower (if thats the right term) it was connected to the internet via the virgin media cable and the modem. I had a laptop that worked wirelessly with (netgear MR814v2tw) with a dongle, i dropped that laptop accidentally and now have a (Samsung R60, running vista) when i set the laptop up it worked wirelessly fine, i didnt have to set up the connectivity or anything, it just happened(although the day after i set up the laptop my desktop ceased to work, i think the battery died, so disconnected the tower etc) now my laptop works via the ethernet cable but not wirelessly. Whats happened please ???

I have a funny feeling it was connecting to an unsecured wifi network it had found and now that person has secured it. On the taskbar next to the clock is what looks like 2 squares with a round circle on the bottom right. Right click on that and select Connect to Network and then browse for your wifi network name.
