Commuting to Leeds (parking or train travel?)

Hi All,

I'm going to be starting a job soon in Leeds City Centre. I live just outside Huddersfield so the options are:

Drive to Leeds and park

or

Drive to Huddersfield and park at station, then get train to Leeds.

I was wondering if anyone could give any advice on this? Any cheap car parks near Leeds city centre?

Even buying season tickets for the train and train station car park it would still be about £1500 for the year, or about £6.30 per day plus the fuel to drive to huddersfield. I was thinking it might just be cheaper to drive to leeds if there is some reasonable parking.

Cheers,
Boonerz

I've never seen any cheap parking in Leeds - except after about 5:30pm, so I would say that's a non-starter especially as driving into Leeds at any time let alone rush hour is a miserable experience more noted for the time you spend not moving than the pleasure of the driving

Have you considered driving to another station rather than Huddersfield, preferably one that isn't in zone 5 so you can reduce the cost of your season ticket - or even buying a bike and leaving it at Huddersfield station.

Oh and don't immediately assume that an annual pass is going to the cheapest option - I used to commute in the WY area and came to the conclusion that monthly tickets worked out cheaper once you took into account holidays & other dead days like weekends when you wouldn't be normally using your pass. It also meant that I didn't have to ind all the money for the pass at once - I could pay monthly.

Park around Greenhead Park (it's free) and walk into town.

My sister's BF catches the train from Leeds to Huddersfield as nowhere to park at Huddersfield.

There are all day car parks in Leeds from something like £3.50 a day. Also bear in mind driving in and out of Leeds will get tiresome at rush hours.

No please, there's hardly any space up there as it is!

I'm sure Kirklees are working on a scheme to charge around there as we speak, so there should be loads of space after that!

What about a motorcycle? Parking is free/cheap and you get to use the HOV lanes too. I started biking when I had to do an 18 mile daily commute into Bristol. My journey by bike was a consistent 25-30 mins door to door whereas a car would take anything between 30 minutes and 1 hour - plus I got all the benefits described above and I was able to use the bike in all but the very worst weather.

one thing that might be worth checking (my friend did this) is leasing a parking place from someone who has a flat in the city centre. there are thousands of flats in the centre and many have secure parking that is unused in the day time. there is a website but i am not sure what its called - try googling "rental car spaces in leeds". my friend got in touch with someone who had a flat with 2 parking spaces but no car! so he worked out a great deal with them.
    good luck!

Thanks for all the replies. Anyone know what time it fills up around Greenhead Park?
