PC restarts when play DVD or open NERO

Hi

Can anyone help solve a problem with my eMachines P4 2.4ghz running XP with 2gb RAM?

When I open my SONY DWQ120A DVD RW or Lite On Combo SohC4836V drive the PC restarts, or if I run Nero software. Anyone have any ideas?

It onlt recently started and is becoming a pain. Could it be the new RAM that I added after using the crucial website to find the relevant one?

Hasa it been doing it since ram was installed? I cant see how really!
Still, be worth checking the connections of the drives in case you knocked them or something.
Its possible (Though unlikely) that adding the new ram has taken the WATTAGE use past its limits! Meaning that when you open a cd drawer, its pulling more power than it can muster and reset itself? Can you open it up and tell us what the power supply is?

  • Does it restart nicely, or just crash - off - ??

Loose power connector to the hard drive, reset connections.

    Thanks for the replies.

I will check PSU tonight but think it is 350w - and has been okay since purchase a couple of years ago when the two drives were installed.

The PC restart is simply that - it turns off entirely then goes throguh normal startup routine. It happens when the drive is opened or when NERO is clicked to start.

I'll check all of the connextions as well just in case I knocked something when I installed the new 1gb ram.

    Hope that helps.

    Maybe best 'trialing by error'
Completely disconnect one drive and try it
Then swap them over. May be able to determine which drive is at fault?

  • Is your computer set to automatically reboot on error?

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the Advanced tab. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times. Restart.

Do what causes the error again and take notes of the STOP code in the Blue Screen that should follow and report back.

Might be worthing downloading and installing software to monitor the voltages, like Speedfan or Motherboard Monitor. See if the voltages are fluctuating more than usual - try it while the PC is idle and then under load - which is a sign of a poor quality PSU or being under too much load.

Your own motherboard manufacturer may provide their own monitoring software, which may be preferable, as other software can be picky able what hardware it choose to work on.

Thanks for the tips. I've removed the two sticks of ram and have tried them in one by one, and no problems. I've now inserted both together and opened NERo and had no problems.

I've also tried opening the two disk draws and it seems ok now.

The cables seem okay to the drives, hard disk etc so everything seems okay.

    Time will tell!

So the ram cards were the problem?
Do they both work together fine? (As in the ACTUAL size they should be added together ~ 1 gig for example)
I can only assume that 1 wasnt fitted correctly somehow

    Anyways, least ur sorted :)
