Data Execution Prevention - Help!

Trying to download pictures from my digital camera and for the first time I am now getting this message:

Data Execution Prevention - To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.

I can't view any pics at the moment. I have A_V scanned the camera, all is clear. Can I turn this DEP off?

  • What Virus Scanner do you use?

What operating system are you on?

Are you using a software program, ie from the camera manufacturer, to copy the pictures from your camera to your computer?

You can turn DEP off by holding down the Windows key and pressing the "Pause | Break" key simultaneously (to open the system properties window), then click the Advanced tab, then click the Settings button in the "Performance" section, followed by the "Data Execution Prevention" tab.

I'm not entirely sure this would be advisable, however. If DEP is preventing you from running a program, that program is presumably trying to execute code from a section of memory that supposedly contains data, not instructions. It might be worth seeing if there's an updated version of the driver/software that you are using and see if that fixes the problem.

The problem occurs when trying to view photos in Windows Explorer. (I'm running xp and AVG). Downloaded photos by just copying and pasting from the camera, I never use the crappy programs that cameras etc give you. Will try what esuhl suggests.
