Surely that's perfectly normal for any bank on a Sunday night , as that's when most of their machines will have run out of cash

ING Direct doesn't have cash machines.

Look, I'm sure you're all right and there's no need to panic.

And if you ARE all going to panic, at least wait for a few days so that I can get my money out... ;)

Seriously, if ING wanted to panic its UK customers, what's the one thing they could have done? Shut down their website, like Icesave.

    Very smart.

it doesnt say its having technical problems, in speech marks or not

Which is why I said "IF"..... and the speech marks denote them being a feeble excuse.

The actual reason given is "All of our systems are currently being updated......". So a technical excuse is provided but I think we all know it's to stop a run happening. Having said that, when I used to bank with ING, one of the frustrating things was I would regularly find I would get messages like that when trying to login. Icesave's website was much better. :D

Post clashed with someone else's, so I've deleted the overlap.

As for Kaupthing customers, the site was working fine ten minutes ago, and I took a withdrawal all the way to confirmation, when I aborted it.

    Sigh...

what it actually says, rather than what the erroneous posters have written, is "systems are currently being updated and unfortunately you will be unable to access your account between 9pm on Sunday 19th October until 4am on Monday 20th October."

Yes, they changed it about half an hour ago.

Look, what do you expect them to put on their website? "PLEASE DON'T TAKE OUT YOUR MONEY!!!!!"

Is there any reason why the UK authorities should be faster than the Dutch authorities? In any event it might be prudent where one has large amounts to spread them between jurisdictions where these are strong ones.

Just having to deal with a UK orgranisation seems like it would be a lot easier. The Heritable customers will already be receiving their forms from FSCS. If dealing with forms in another language, being sent between different countries, with a different country likely to prioritise efforts initially on its domestic depositors, I feel it would be quicker/easier dealing with the FSCS.

It's normal for a bank to update their website and restrict access. Nationwide do it almost every night. It's usually after midnight though.

From the message originally posted on their website it suggests that the last time they took their website wholly offline for an update was the 17th May. Is it really a coincidence that their next (un?)scheduled maintenance began a few hours after this news report?
  • cleardot.gifcleardot.gifcleardot.gifcleardot.gifcleardot.gif"Thank you for contacting ING Direct.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you. "

I was not nervous on hearing the news on BBC that ING was being recapitalised.........until I tried to log into my Account and got the above message. What an idiotic time to be updating your systems. I will be logging on first thing in the morning.

Ironic it is ING's own website that has made me nervous:rolleyes:

But we do, don't we? I have 3 relatives that have already transferred funds out of ING this evening. Thousands of people will have been doing it, so ING have pulled the plug to stop the run and given a feeble excuse. I'm sure ING is too big to fall, but people will still be panicking.

and never let yourself be embarrassed by trying to use an Abbey Debit card first thing on a Monday morning either.
