Advice about removing a supporting wall in a timber frame house

we are thinking about removing the wall between our kitchen and dining room to create an open plan kitchen-diner. Hubby has done some investigating and found out the wall between is a timber frame supporting wall. Would we need to get a steal RSJ put in or would someting else be used? We will be contacting builders and the council but would like to know roughly what needs to be done before we take it any further.
Thanks

Have you got the as built drawings? They may help work out what needs doing.
Depends what it is actually supporting, if not much a wood beam may suffice.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
yes you need to check it out properly. if its just another timber frame wall upstairs maybe a simple box section tube will be enough. or even a wooden beam.
even a simple pillar may do the job.Get some gorm.0 -
We had to install a central timber post, to suport the new timber beam, accross the opening, when we took a wall out.
