Setting up shared printers

I have a LAN with both computers running XP. I have set up the printers to "Sharing" but nothing prints from the guest computer
Any ideas gratefully received
I haven't got one!

  • You must find the Printer first on the guest machine.

Open up Printers, Click Add Printer, Follow the Wizard Through, making sure you tell Windows its on a Network on the first options screen.

Thanks Matt, they show on the Guest Cmp. but when I send something to print it just gives me an error - any other advise? pretty please?

  • What was the error?

You may need to install the drivers on the guess system if they are not already there. Give that a try, if no luck, come back here :)

Can you print a test page over the network??

On the problem comp go to printers and right click.

Select properties and then either on that page or a printing preferences button/tab there should be an option.

If it doesn't work a help function appears that should assist you.

Hi cheekymole, It could be a security issue in that the Main computer hosting the printer won't allow the user on the Guest computer access. Can you try creating a user on the Guest with the same name and password as an Administrator on the main PC and then try connecting. Does it work now?

I find that when you have the same username and password on both PCs, it works a treat, but when you are using different usernames and passwords, it denies access but doesn't always tell you it has and why.

Let me know how you get on and post back if you have any queries. Thanks, tigermatt :)
