Hi looby-loo. To a degree we do as we have night storage heaters, which heat up through the night, so they give out a certain amount through the night too. We don't have them in all rooms (and never in the bedrooms) but there's 1 in the living room, another in the kitchen and 1 in the hallway. When it's really cold we have all 3 on at a low setting, then - if necessary, we can boost the heat in the following evening when we sit down to watch TV etc.

I think it's important to keep the house from getting at all damp, so by doing the above it ensures that as well as keeping the place gently warm for us to come down to. Luckily these days we never have the bitter winters like there used to be in the 60's so things have changed there. Personal preferences all make a big difference, young kiddies/elderly family members in the house too. If ever we need to get up and stay up for any length of time in the night (illness) it's always good to have a warmth to come down too, so a few things to be considered there. See how the winter goes and work from there.

I have many settings on my controller so have it come on through the night if the temperature drops below 5 degrees. After having an extra large radiator fitted a few years ago and this controller my consumption actually dropped.

Never have it on at night, I can't afford it! I used to live with friends (I was their lodger) and they would have it on all night because she was a kidney transplant patient and susceptible to infection if she got cold (that was her excuse anyway!) It was lovely to get up to go to the toilet in the warm.
  • I don't think I could sleep with the heating on at night! Just use a very thick quilt. Plus we always have the window open a little no matter how cold it gets.

Those people who leave heating on at night will probably turn up here in a few months time complaining about how high their energy bills are and the injustice of it all. Obviously i'm not including shift workers or parents who get up to feed babies etc..

A thick quilt and an hot water bottle should be enough to keep anyone warm.
This space is available to rent... :D

Not anymore, you're right its not like before with prices rising now. We put it on for half an hour before bed time to warm up the bedrooms and thats about it :(

I hate the idea of leaving heating etc running whilst asleep when times are hard.

Leaving the heating on overnight is frightfully vulgar.
  • i dont think i would be able to sleep if we had heating on through the night.... if its chilly at bedtime my son has an electric blanket we switch on for 10 minutes before he gets into bed, my daughter is lucky she has the hot water tank in her room so doesn't need the radiator on most times. and my central heating comes on at 6.30 in the morning along with the water so its all warm for the morning .... my thermostat is only ever on 18 at the highest at the moment though, so most of the time the heating doesn't even come on!

Why does that have to be assumed? Not all night time heating is frivolous or wasteful and looby was talking about the really cold weather. To get Economy 7 prices we have to heat our water (once every 4 days) and build up the night storage heater through the night. So long as it's only on low settings and the 3 are only used in really cold weather then there need be no waste and certainly no moaning about high bills.
