It occurs to me that notching a joist from below is a hard way to do things.
:rotfl:
Yep, the previous owner did a lot of VERY strange things and it's all the more frightening as he used to be a builder
Some of his botches were quite obvious to us and the builders have exclaimed at quite a few they've uncovered along the way. He built the original stud wall for the utility with skirting board hence it almost came down when the arch was removed. Builders removed it and rebuilt it giving us a bit more room in the utility.
Lots of other c*ck ups but the worst has to be when he did the DIY loft conversion (with no planning permission and no building regs approval, same as the front utility/bathroom extension which would appear to have been built on the lane the house fronts on to, the rear kitchen extension which he was caught doing and made to apply for building regs but never got it signed off, but we think the conservatory may have had official approval as Anglian were involved). With the loft he cut the supports to the roof and also cut into the purlin to give headroom on the stairs, leaving just 1/3 of it's original depth. We are awaiting planning permission to rebuild the loft properly and a suitable reduction in the purchase price has made this possible.0
