Kitchen plinth lights

Are they nice or naff? I've always liked them but have heard varying opinions on them. If you was fitting a new kitchen would you have them?

We've wired up & actually bought some of the colour changing light bars, from Ikea, to go beneath our central island.

But then had second thoughts, so they went back.

but think they'd look good in a party!!

As for in the plinth themselves, not too sure of the actual effect, in many kitchens, for it to look 'right'.

I've always managed to resist buying them. I think they look lovely, especially in the modern high gloss kitchens.

My sister in law has what we call 'disco lights' which change colour. Or they would if they turned them on ;) I think I've seen the lights twice and we're always in the kitchen when we're at theirs (because the fridge is there with wine in it!).

When you add in the cost of the extra wiring, I couldn't justify the cost.

Why do you need other peoples opinions, as to whether they are naff or not. If you think that they are naff, then they are naff, and other persons opinions are irrelevant. If other people think that they are nice, that is no reason for you to think that they are nice as well.
Of course, if you want my opinion, I think that they are naff!! lol
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • You're right 27col I shouldn't care what other people think and should just go for what I like, however being thin skinned and rather sensitive I'd like to get the look of my kitchen just right so that the majority of people walk in and say "Wow! I love your kitchen!!!" lol :D But then I guess you'll never please everyone all of the time...

The plinth lights would be fairly easy to wire in at this stage as I am first fix stage (my kitchen is in a right state!) I still can't decide whether to fit them or not...

    Extreme naff I'm afraid.

Form should follow function IMO - exactly what function do plinth lights perform? Help you check your shoes are clean, electrocute/burn crawling babies probing fingers?

    Don't do it!:D

i would have plinth lights in our kitchen if we had a new one fitted..

we often use just the cooker hood light as an ambient light source for when the kids have to walk through togo to the downstairs toilet saves money in turning main lights on every time..

however if it was a choice between plinth lights and work top lights I would always go for lights under cupboard...one christmas we hung some white fairy lights under cupboard they stayed there untill i got fed up changing light all the time......

I don't think I'd have any major reaction against a kitchen with plinth lights, but I wouldn't be bowled over either. The two things that come to mind are a/ why? what's the point and b/ this must the be the route to the emergency exit.

I like them, I think they just add a little lift to what is normally a boring, dark area. Having said that, my preference is for small, discreet, lights that are mostly bulb and have little in the way of surround iyswim......I'm personally not fond of the large round (with big area of trim) or square (with multiple lights in the one fitting) types.

I figured that if I got fed up with them or they became very unpoplular in future, it is dead easy to take them out and stick on new plinths.
