Recommended Web hosting - free/up to £5pm??

Hi, My husband has been self employed for years but now wants to get a basic website set up. It will just be for info really so doesn't need any payment sections etc.

I've searched on here for web hosting but i'm still very unsure where to start. If I can find a good free provider that we can make a nice looking site thats great otherwise about £5 per month would be the budget.. unfortunately, we're wanting to do it ourselves rather than pay a company (due to costs).

I'd like to be able to direct the other name we bought to his address that he will advertise and have a feature to email him.

Any recommendations on good hosts or info on how to get started? We are novices when it comes to html and technical terms :o

I am a novice, but have just spent the past 2 hours (what a way to spend a Saturday night!) working on my site. I went via quidoc and got £2.50 for taking a microsoft buisness package that includes a website (basic) that you cna design and its free if you choose a .co.uk domain name (which redirects you to the website under microsoft live).

You get quite a few pages (when you can find them)! And for me, who knew nothing, it has worked quite well. There is also a contact us page that will send any quearies to whatever email address you sign up with. You also get your own email address (but I can not remember my log in!).

The design planner is basic, but you CAN upload pages you do yourself and have whatever layout you want. I ofcourse have no idea how to do this, so just going with what I can make up with the planner.

As for how to get your traffic re directed, no idea.

Oh and microsoft do call you at home, and give you a support number to call (I think its an 0800) so it depends if your into that sort of thing. Maybe you could call and ask them how to re direct traffic?

Hope I havent confused you more!

    :o

I use ukhost4u basic hosting starts at 39.99 per year (plus VAT). Simple to use and set up but others which cost more may have better support (although I've had no problems on that front) have a look at a few hosts then e-mail people who have websites with them to see what the service is really like.
  • I can highly recommend Vidahost. They have a starter package for £2.99 per month or £29.99 for the year, and the service is excellent, with no downtime that I've been aware of in the two years or so I've used them.

free hosts - ad free and stable as well. been running my forum there for nearly 2 years and can probably count on one hand the times they've been down, and still have room left!

if you look at office live, its a good offer, free email (basically using hotmail) but you cant upload your own webpages, insert flash to webpages, insert custom content.

    Your very limited.

You honestly pay for what you get with web hosts, some even don't host it themselves, just pass the management to an external company to save them money.

Check out www.1and1.co.uk, they do some excellent packages, and very fast. My only port of call when hosting websites.

Could have a look at http://www.dream-hosting.co.uk. They have hosting packages starting at £9.99/year. They have some website building templates that look nice that you can use too, so no need to use proper website software. That said you could use Word if you wanted. I used Dream-Hosting when I moved to an ISP that didn't provide webspace. I took the opportunity to buy a domain as well. Another hoster is Purple Cloud at www.purplecloud.com.
