Would a phone bought in the USA work in UK?

I have a brilliant monthly tariff with O2, but my phone is absolutely knackered and i cant upgrade because its a simplicity (sim only) traiff. I want the Nokia 6600 fold but its pretty expensive. My brother in law goes to america quite often with work, if he got me one there for cheaper would it work here? would it be any different?
