best use of saved mortgage payments

I have a tracker mortgage and hope to make considerable savings if the interest rate falls further.

With interest also falling on savings accounts, would I be better paying off the mortgage, or, as I am tempted to do, is this a good time to try buying shares while there are some bargains to be had?

I have never bought shares before but I do understand this would be a long term investment and I am only thinking of investing the money I would save from the rate dropping, effectively a bonus I wasn't expecting. I would want to be making a profit to support my ailing endowment by the time I retire and pay off my mortgage in 9 years time.
