Hanging a Gate

Hi,
I got a B&Q Auto Gate Latch Pack to rehang our back garden gate.
IN the pack are :
the latch
the sticky out bit that clips into the latch
a spring to keep the gate shut
2 hinges
relevant screws
and two wee cylindrical bits?
and a length of steel about 4 inches long and 4mm in diameter?
any idea what the last two items are for?

The steel is for tensioning the gate spring and the two grub screw things hold the tension. In wood we trust.0
