Hi,can anyone give me some advice. My car was stolen from outside my house. The co-op car insurance have offerd £235.00 less £100.00 excess, making total payment £135.00.My car was a Nissan Primera 2.0 SLX lAutomatic Estate, she had done 125000 miles from new with just me and one other owner. The car was in very good condition,it had a cd/radio player and a samsung in car phone kit.I dont think I can replace it for £135.00.is there anything I can do,or do I have to accept there offer.I have been with the co-op for more than 20 years, and my insurance primium is more than there offer.Any advice please.

  • You have not mentioned the year of the vehicle. In the first instance I would find out the top and bottom book value of the car, if you chat up a garage with access to glass's guide that will tell you what amount you can expect. It is then up to you to convince the insurance company that your car was in 'immaculate' condition and worthy of the top book value.......good luck.

Looking on autotrader I would say that is particulary bad- theres a few 1996 ones on there for low £300's.

I know that it was worth a lot more to you and you have obviously looked after it, but it is 16 years old. Unfortunately I agree with Flame Cloud............it doesn't look promising.......sorry.

I would appeal against the offer & see what happens- not quite the same but DS had his moped stolen and insurance company offered £600 I told them that I didn't think that seemed right & could they look again. They said they couldn't so I told them I would go through the ombudsman & they offered me a further £300 so it may be worth calling them for a chat.

I think your missing the point

You insure for market value, frankly a 14 year old nissan primera is worth nothing, also its in "good" condition, what does this mean?

having looked on autotrader nissan primera's newer than yours are available for £300 and there isnt many for sale at all due to the age

You could maybe ask your insurers for another £100 or so but a 14 year old nissan primera isnt worth £600

Especially when it's actually 16 years old ;)

personally, if you have been with the CIS for 20 i would stick with them.
insurance companies are all the same and any other ins. company would probably not have treated you any differently, and especially so if they up their offer which they undoubtedly will if you reject their first offer.

  • Hello,

I would try and speak with them about it first. Car insurance companies are there, after all, to make money - I wrote off my classic mini recently (which was devastating) and they offered me £400 for it - my excess was £50! I wasn't going to get another car for £50 :)

Eventually after speaking to the man doing the valuation again, finding similar cars on autotrader etc, and explaining to him the value of the car (I had been offered £1600 to buy it a year previously, and minis don't really depreciate any more) they upped the offer by £300.

Be polite but firm, stand your ground on how much you think your car is worth - they may reconsider their offer.
