CORSA 1.3cdti only getting 40MPG????
Hi Everyone, Just looking for some advice really. I bought a brand new Vauxhall Corsa 5dr 1.3 CDTI in September 2008 and I am getting very poor MPG. The brocure states that urban driving should reach 45mpg, Extra Urban should get 70mpg with the combined at 58mpg. I am not getting any where near these figures and I havent been since I got the car but all my dealer tells me is that its because its a new car, well its done 7000 miles now and it is not getting any better. The best performance Ive had is 47mpg and thats only because I went on a long motorway run, day to day despite the fact i drive 'extra urban' I am getting figures of 41 and 43 MPG, lower that what it states for even Urban driving. I am so dissapointed as I worked hard to buy this car out right and now I feel its been a complete waste of money. Does anyone know what I can do to get this problem sorted? Is there any consumer rights I can complain to for false advertising?I really dont know what to do and I just feel like Ive been cheated. Please could someone help?
Thanks
Leanne
Thanks
Leanne

the guide figures are nonsense
also cyhange you driving style0 -
Guide figures given are only from data on a rolling road so wont include traffic, stop start and hard urban driving. If you have a heavy right foot, you may only see 25+ MPG around town even in a diesel. A car will become more efficient the longer the run and warmer the engine.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Please don't be offended if that opinion differs from yours, but feel free to click the 'Thanks' button if it's at all helpful!0

In my opinion the dealer is talking through their rear orifice and trying to fob you off. Yes, new engines are a bit "tight" for a few miles but after 7000 miles (in a month!!!!) and the official figures are only a guide.
I have a 1.7CDTi Meriva, larger car and possibly a bit heavier, purchased new in March this year. It's consistently returned an average of over 50mpg with a mix of urban, rural and motorway use.
I think the 70mpg for extra urban is a bit optimistic but I'm sure you should be achieving better than you are.
As has been suggested though try to be more concious of your driving style - please don't be offended but have you checked your tyre pressures and what you carry around as permanent ballast? That 1.3 engine is possibly a bit too small for your use and maybe having to work extra hard, a smaller engine doesn't always mean more mpg.
My daughter has a 2004 1.0litre petrol Corsa and gets more mpg than you for mostly urban use and she doesn't hang around either!:p
Try registering and asking here http://www.vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/index.php as someone might have a similar vehicle.0 -
7000 miles in a month, do you ever go to bed?;)0

OP - no disrespect, but 7000 in a month or less...
Are you kidding us??
If not, exactly how are and where are you driving?? One must be sensible here and realise that tho consumption is a guide, it does ultimately depend on the driver and how they drive...Genie

Surely this is a typo - the op probably means 700 miles???????0 -
Take it up with them again and don't be fobbed off.
A mate of mine bought a 2nd hand renault. That was returning poor MPG and he took it up with the delear and Renault UK and the ended up fitting a new engine for him.
I am not suggesting that's they way you should go, but it shows they will act if you are firm about it and it's not upto scratch.
I actually think you are being short changed on the MPG. People will always say the quoted MPG is a guide, but you are nowhere near it, so something is wrong. I know someone who had a C3 diesel for 4 years and that did very close to the guide MPG with sensible driving. He was getting over 70 mpg on the motorway if he stayed at under 3000 revs and always got 55+ anywhere around town.
Have you checked if the car can be returned within a set period if you are not happy with it?0 -
 OK, Chill out.
Do the figures again.
I doubt you could get near your fuel consumption again, and if there was anything wrong the car would just not feel right.
As a comparison we bought a new Clio 1.5 dci a few years back. 198 miles on the clock as an x demonstrator.
Took it on hols round Scotland to run it in, (yes I do believe in that)
Returned over 67MPG, and after another 50K equals or betters that.
If that fails, chop your right leg off.:rolleyes:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
well its done 7000 miles now and it is not getting any better. T
Running in a diesel:
Vary revs, don't exceed but do go up to 3500rpm for about the first 1200 miles.
After that each trip out work the revs up to the red line (maximum). Visit maximum revs several times a week. This will loosen the engine up.
You should see better fuel consumption after about 1200 miles but you may still see gradual improvement until 15,000 miles+
Also be aware winter is coming which increases fuel consumption by 10%.
The official figures are contrived and based on summer weather.
My cars official is about 48mpg. I can actually get 44mpg (winter) up to 48mpg (spring and summer) driving carefully and using a fuel additive or BP Ultimate Diesel or Shell V-Power (improves MPG by 7%).
Also best not to rely on anything the cars on board computer tells you for MPG, work it out yourself by fuel used (brim to brim tank fill and what the pump says you have put in) and miles covered.0
