    Dazza..... you said,

'This is more common on older cars that have carburetors instead of fuel injection as the fuel is drawn in because of the vacuum created when the piston moves down so it keeps on putting fuel in and your hot plug continues to ignite it and so on and so on until the plug cools.'

We had to call out a repairman yesterday because the car was driving itself - this sounds like what the repairman said. He disabled the air flow something so that we could drive home but said not to drive it like that.

Problem is this car is a part ex for a new car due at the end of the week - will it be expensive to fix??

    Thanks

  • The description is a bit too vague as to clearly give an answer but you mentioned airflow, possibly he disconnected the vacuum advance pipe that goes from your carburettor/manifold to your distributor or he removed the air filter or disconnected the warm air/cold air solenoid. without really knowing what he did exactly its hard to say what the cost would roughly be, but if it was any of those that I have just mentioned then it would be inexpensive.

Just a note, reconditioned carburettors are usually quite cheap, you have to give them your old when buying it.
Sometimes carburettors can be very tricky to deal with without the right equipment and it may just be easier to replace it with a reconditioned one.

I remember replacing one on my ford escort about 5 years ago for around £30.

    Thanks for that... ;)

He did try and trim a pipe first that had split - it's a saab 93. Usually costs a fortune!

    Fingers crossed :xmassign:

  • Just thought I'd keep you updated. My car (the peugeot 406) seems to have cured itself for the time being!

It is now turning on and off as it should. The idling is still erractic though. As it only cost me £600 and is worth £500 scrap, I think I'll just keep running it for now.

As I have to pass over 100 road bumps a week just going to and from school and work, there is not point shelling out for a decent car!!

  • Update from me too...
Car in disgrace so traded it in for newer one. On the day of the trade in it would not start!!
Nice man from garage round corner got us going though and the exchange took place ( we did tell the salesman about the problems but he didn't care).

    Hope yours stays well behaved.

  • My 206 does a smiliar sort of thing and in fact, I've just mentioned it in a posting (sorry, don't know how to do the hyperlink thing).

Basically, my car radio/stereo will get stuck and the car will continue to beep at me if I'm using a mobile phone, when I either unlock or turn on the ignition!!
The CD/radio gets stuck so you can't adjust the volume, change track/station or turn the damn thing off!! The only cure is to switch the car off an wait about 10 mins. During those 10 mins, whilst the ignition is off, it continues to play and bleep!! Sometimes it has gone on for 30 mins before!

I've only had it less than 2 years (from new) and it drives me nuts. Not to mention the other bigger problems it's had including needing a new engine part and new windscreen!!

Will never get a Peugeot again! I'm glad to think I;'m not the only one who's car needs an exorcist!
