Fuzzgun19 - best of luck and enjoy.

Can I suggest you get a book on the subject. There are loads of good ones around that give good advice on how to keep the tank, also gives types and names fishes and what they are good at.

Eventually try to get fish balance the tank, ie top feeders, mid feeders and bottom feeders.

Guppys to have as top and middle feeders, try an Angel fish. They are very territorial and a little agresive to others but the others soon learn to keep away. Little neons are good middle feeders, buy loads of them they go around in shoals, As for bottom feeders, cat fish.

As I have already mentioned, Clown Loaches if you get a snail problem, and Bristle nose catfish for algae.

Invest in a syphon kit to empty the water every month, and a magnetic scraper to clean the algae off the glass. Remember to get some chlorine neutraliser when you do a water change, Fish do not like Chlorine. Also a temperature gauge, they must be kept at a constant 77degrees.

    Have fun.

    Hi,
I wanted to buy some neons aswell, but when i asked in the pet shop they said that neons dont mix well with guppies and will nibble on their tails.
    Has anyone else found this?

I had this problem when i 1st started out the best thing i found to do was anything a bought for my tank i boiled it first.(apart from the fish)
gravel, fake plants pretty much anything that seemed to help.
Like some said before get a good filter and pump to keep circulation in the tank. Also a good cleaner fish.
One last thing not sure if you know but when cleaning your fish only remove about 1/4 of the water and every 2-3 months take everything out and give it a good srub dont forget to clean the filter inside the filter.
    hope this helps

My catfish ate my neons :( I had a goldfishy type thing that committed suicide rather than live in my tank :( Tip - if you have an external air pump don't set it below the tank without a non return valve. It's amazing how much water can syphon out of a 6 foot tank if the electric goes off when you're out. :(

Guppies breed ALL the time!! There's no stopping them ;)
They are usually quite good at keeping their own numbers down tho - mine used to eat the babies as soon as they popped out.

If you aim to keep the babies, you should get a small floatation tank to keep them in until they grow a bit. Some of the babies are born clever and they hide themselves in the gravel..... however more often than not they get eaten or pulled into the pump.

lmao, yeah true. As a novice its still good to see loads of babies swimming, no doubt in a few months we will be sick of them though.
