how do i create smiley faces when using my laptop keypad (when not on mse )

Smiley faces on MSE (and other messageboards) are actually little images that are inserted into the writing, and aren't actual characters you can type.
Word will convert the original emoticon :-) to a smiley face (it auto-corrects it), which is text but is a special character and comes out like this if I copy and paste it into this message:
I have to confess to not understanding the details of this - I get a little square with the code F04A in it, which I think is some sort of code *. But I daresay some people might actually see the smiley face. I think it depends on what fonts or languages you have installed on your PC.
It is usually possible to insert a smiley face picture into a message on a board that doesn't otherwise supply them, but it's a bit technical and requires you to have one stored on another website somewhere.
Personally I prefer the original emoticon :-) * Edit: F04A is hexadecimal (base 16) for 61,514 (decimal). Not that that's of any help but now you know!0 -
